African Industrialization Day – Ending the paradox of jobless growth

Marking the African Industrialization day 2011, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, in collaboration with the National Union of Textile and Garment Workers in Nigeria (NUTGTWN) and numerous unions from employment-relevant sectors, organized a press conference to start a union-driven initiative for job creation in the country.

Comrade Issa Aremu, General Secretary of NUTGTWN and Vice-President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) emphasized the need for a re-industrialization of the country to end the “unprecedented decline in industrial manufacturing and stunted growth in agriculture and services”.
Recent statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics put unemployment figures at 23.9 per cent up from 19.7 per cent in 2009. Despite massive oil wealth, more than 70% of the Nigerian population is estimated to live below the poverty line.

A representative of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) elaborated on the theme of this year’s African Industrialization Day: “Sustainable Energy for Accelerated Industrial Development”. According to UNIDO, “the AID, as an inclusive event, represents an opportunity to develop mechanisms necessary to create jobs, stimulate technology transfer and lower resource stress through the promotion of modern energy forms and services for productive activities, industrial development and entrepreneurship”.
